Create 3D video with Stream to 3D and watch it in SKYBOX VR
Stream to 3D and SKYBOX VR have separate jobs. Stream to 3D converts the ordinary 2D source on a Windows PC and creates a conventional stereoscopic video file. SKYBOX remains the headset viewing environment.
For all currently documented player and display routes, see Players and 3D Displays.
Why Convert is a good fit
SKYBOX is designed around video-file playback. Convert creates a reusable 3D asset that can be copied to the headset, opened from compatible network storage or presented through SKYBOX's PC file-sharing route.
Unlike Play or Stream, Convert does not have to finish each frame before its viewing deadline. You can therefore choose Temporal or Depth Guided according to the source, result and available processing time even when the selected settings would not sustain real-time playback.
Quick start
- In Stream to 3D, choose Convert and select a short representative 2D source.
- Choose the intended headset or viewing route in the Wizard.
- Select Temporal or Depth Guided. Convert does not run the real-time comparison because processing may take longer than the programme.
- Choose an SBS or TB/OU layout. Start with Half SBS unless you have already proved a full-resolution route.
- Keep MKV for the first test unless the exact SKYBOX/device route requires MP4. Select only the audio and subtitle tracks you need.
- Save the result under a new filename and let the conversion finish.
- Make the file available to SKYBOX through headset storage or an SMB share.
- Open the file in SKYBOX and select the 3D layout that matches the Stream to 3D output.
Local and network file routes
- Headset storage: copy the completed file to a location SKYBOX can browse.
- SMB: share the folder on the local network and browse it through SKYBOX's SMB support.
- DLNA: SKYBOX also documents DLNA access, but external subtitles may not be available over that route. Test the exact file before depending on it.
These are file-access routes, not Stream to 3D's live network Stream workflow. Completed files work through each compatible route. A proven alternative is to write MKV output into an SMB share and open it in SKYBOX while Stream to 3D is still converting; SKYBOX can continue reading that compatible file as it grows.
Make the layout unambiguous
If SKYBOX does not detect the stereo layout correctly, select it manually. Current SKYBOX guidance also recognises Full_SBS or fullsbs and Full_TB or fulltb in a file or folder name for full-resolution layouts. Stream to 3D's generated filename must remain distinct from the original 2D source.
Half and Full describe the packed frame resolution, not the amount of depth. A full layout carries a full-resolution image for each eye and therefore creates a larger frame and higher decode demand. Prove the target headset and codec with a short sample before starting a long conversion.
Audio and subtitles
Stream to 3D can copy or encode selected audio and subtitle streams into the output, but the destination route still determines what SKYBOX can display or decode. SKYBOX's current support guidance says external subtitles can work from local storage and SMB, while external subtitles over DLNA may not appear.
For the first test, choose one ordinary audio track and either no subtitles or one known subtitle track. Confirm both in SKYBOX before converting a film or batch. If the default MKV is not suitable for the exact route, follow the MP4 output guide and retest with AAC audio.
Release 6 methods
Temporal is the established efficient method with broad hardware support. Depth Guided is AI-assisted and can use optional NVIDIA acceleration on compatible systems. Neither changes SKYBOX's role: SKYBOX receives an ordinary stereoscopic video file after Stream to 3D has created it.
Troubleshooting
- The file looks 2D or doubled: select the correct SBS or TB/OU mode in SKYBOX.
- The aspect ratio is wrong: confirm Half versus Full and use SKYBOX's full-SBS matching option where applicable.
- The file does not open: make a short AVC/AAC MP4 compatibility sample before changing several settings at once.
- Subtitles are missing: test local storage or SMB rather than assuming the DLNA route carries external subtitles.
- Conversion is slow: Convert is allowed to run below real time. Reduce output demands or use a compatible accelerated path only if elapsed time matters.
